Gilchrist out as Punjab face Gayle storm

MOHALI: A batting lineup boasting ofChristopher Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan at the top, followed by AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli, can decimate any bowling attack individually or collectively. But the team is languishing almost at the bottom.

One would think it’s a comforting situation for Punjab after their forgettable outing against Kolkata on Wednesday night but the batting firepower that Bangalore possess can test the best of teams in the IPL, leave alone Punjab, who will be without their skipper Adam Gilchrist.

By evening, the home team got a jolt when it was announced that their captain, who had suffered a hamstring injury on Wednesday, had pulled out and the team would be led by the other Aussie, David Hussey. Coming on top of the listless performance against Kolkata, the home team will have to raise its game many notches in the absence of Gilchrist.

A team, like Bangalore, that holds so much potential needs to be on the guard against surprises. They know they are in the lion’s den and need to go out all guns blazing.

Punjab were sleepwalking through their match against Kolkata with their batsmen showing no urgency. Of course, they were hindered by the injury to Gilchrist and the run out of Hussey added to their woes. But barely six an over was never going to be enough. Their batsmen need to score big in order to challenge the likes of Gayle and Co. on Friday.

Punjab may finally be tempted to play Azhar Mahmood. He could well be brought in for Dimitri Mascarenhas who had a none-too-impressive game against Kolkata.
