‘Black money recall demand not anti-national’

BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Monday attacked his Congress counterpart Sonia Gandhi for her barbs at the Opposition and civil society activists and asked whether it was anti-national to demand bringing back the black money stashed abroad. Gadkari asked Gandhi to “rise above party politics” and toil to free the country from price rise, poverty and hunger.

“Sonia Gandhi’s allegations against Baba Ramdev are baseless. Is it anti-national to demand that Indian black money be brought back for the country’s well-being? I feel she should not have done so,” Gadkari told the media after Sonia’s comment at the CWC meeting here on Monday.

“I am very sad and it is unfortunate that on an issue of national importance such baseless allegations have been levelled for political gains. This is not proper and the people of the country will not agree with her,” Gadkari said.

The BJP chief shared Ramdev’s views that the if brought back to the country the black money would benefit the poor, farmers and labourers. “No politics should be brought into this. And Sonia Gandhi should cooperate in further building the environment to fight corruption,” the BJP president said.

Gadkari’s response to Sonia’s remarks came after Baba Ramdev met the BJP chief and sought the Opposition party’s support to his campaign against black money. After securing a letter of support from Gadkari, Ramdev claimed his agitation was apolitical and he had reached out to all parties, including the Congress.

“I have written to Sonia Gandhi, too, and sought an appointment. I will be meeting AB Bardhan (CPI), Sharad Yadav (JD-U), Udhav Thackeray (Shiv Sena), Prakash Karat (CPM), Lalu Yadav (RJD) and Chandrababu Naidu (TDP),” Ramdev said.

Even the BJP chief, who touched Ramdev’s feet and sought his blessings, appealed other parties to join the movement launched by the Yoga Guru. “I would also pray to Soniaji to understand this movement. This is not against any political party or individual. It is against black money. This is for the welfare of the people,” Gadkari said.

After the CWC meeting, Gadkari also called on Gandhi and extended to her an invitation for his son Sarang’s wedding in Nagpur on June 24. Both BJP and Congress claimed the meeting was purely personal and no political matter was discussed.
