Anna Hazare writes to PM, will go on fast next week

Raising doubts over passage of Lokpal Bill in Parliament by December 23 before the ongoing winter session ends, Anna Hazare Saturday shot off a fresh letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, reiterating his threat of going on an “indefinite fast” from December 27 and starting a “Jail-Bharo” agitation from December 30 in case the Congress-led UPA government fails to pass a strong Lokpal bill during this session.

In a strongly-worded four-page letter, Hazare expressed surprise at the Union Cabinet passing a separate Citizens’ Charter bill on December 13 even as Parliament had passed a resolution in August which stated that the citizen charter will be under Lokpal.

“You yourself have written to me assuring me of it… then why are you retracting from your own words… Now it is being said that this citizen charter bill will be sent to the Standing Committee which… it will take another four months. Don’t you think that people of this country are being cheated over and over again? This behaviour of the government is not right at all.”

The 74-year-old activist added: “The government made several promises on Lokpal in the last one year but every time the people of this country were betrayed… Keeping faith in you, we suspended all our agitations till winter session… according to reports published in the media, the winter session will end on December 23… Will the Lokpal Bill be passed by then. We have doubts on this,” Hazare said.

He, however, expressed his faith in the PM this time around. “I have full faith that you will not disappoint the people this time and would fulfil your promise,” said Hazare, noting that the PM has assured him of passing a strong Lokpal bill during Parliament’s winter session only.

He further said that they had suggested making CBI’a anti-corruption wing the investigative agency of Lokpal. But it appears that government is not ready for it. “Does it mean that Lokpal will not have an investigative agency? Without an investigative agency what will it do? Then it is better that we don’t need a Lokpal,” said Hazare while alleging that irrespective of Congress or BJP, CBI has been misused.
