Girl dies as hospital delays shifting her to ICU

A 16-year old girl admitted at Sawai Man Singh government hospital here with respiratory problems died while waiting for admission into the ICU, which was delayed allegedly due to negligence on part of hospital authorities.

Diksha Sharma, who was hospitalised on Sunday, was diagnosed with pneumonia and was in medicine ward of the hospital. In view of her deteriorating condition, doctors attending to the patient recommended her shifting to ICU but she died yesterday as hospital staff allegedly delayed giving her a bed citing procedural formalities, her family claimed.

Gayatri, aunt of the deceased girl who works as a clerk in the same hospital, said that she pleaded with Superintendent Dr. LC Sharma to shift the girl to the ICU but he told them that he would sanction a bed only after receiving a word from the attending doctor.

In the meantime, the girl died, she said. Infuriated over the hospital’s apathy, relatives and family members of the girl protested in the hospital yesterday.

Sharma was out of the hospital at that time and when he returned, he faced protests from the relatives.

Family members of the girl have also given a complaint to the police demanding inquiry into the matter.

An investigation officer said that the facts of the case were being examined.

Today, activists of BJP Yuva Morcha, who were demanding Sharma’s resignation, also staged a protest outside the Superintendent’s chamber and confined him to his room by bolting it from outside.

Terming yesterday’s incident as “unfortunate, the hospital Superintendent said, “I will look into the case”.

“Today I was surrounded by BJP Yuva Morcha workers in my office and they prevented me from doing my duty and misbehaved with me,” he alleged.

Rajesh Tikkiwal, President of BJP Yuva Morcha Jaipur, alleged that “some of the officials present in his chamber misbehaved” with them during the protest.

“They also manhandled some of our members,” he claimed.

Meanwhile, Jaipur Police Commissioner BL Soni has removed SHO Motidoongari Deepak Khandelwal till further orders on complaints by mediapersons that he prevented them from covering the protest of the family members
