Sibal calls meeting of IIT Council

With IIT-Delhi also rejecting the proposed common entrance examination for all engineering colleges, and amidst apprehensions that more IITs may follow suit, Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has called a meeting of the IIT Council next week to address the concerns being raised.

“The uncertainty faced by the student community, consequent to the resolutions of the senates of IIT-Kanpur and IIT-Delhi, requires to be addressed. Consequently, a special meeting of the IIT Council is being convened on June 27,” a statement from the HRD Ministry said.

The IIT Council, which has directors of all the 16 IITs as members, is the highest decision making body related to the IITs and is chaired by the HRD Minister.

Ahead of the IIT Council, the IIT Joint Admission Board is meeting in Delhi on Saturday to deliberate on the same issue.

The government has proposed to replace the multiple entrance examinations for different engineering colleges with a single exam that will act as the qualifying test for the IITs, NITs and all the other engineering colleges. The new format will also give weightage to the marks obtained by students in the Class XII board exams.

IIT-Kanpur was the first one to reject the proposal and said it would conduct a separate entrance examination for itself. IIT-Delhi has now joined ranks.
