Excess summer showers in Kerala

Thiruvanananthapuram, May 1 (PTI) Low-pressure formations in the Bay of Bengal have triggered widespread rainfall in most parts of the state last week, Meteorolgical department said in a release here. The state received widespread rainfall maninly due to the presence of trough of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, IMD sources said. The state had got a cool climate after 61 percent of excess rainfall was recorded in the summer period. Around 65 mm rainfall was reported from all districts except Kannur, sources said. Ernakulam district received the highest rainfall getting an excess of 211 percent, while Kottayam got the second position with 96 percent excess rainfall. The rains occurred as sea surface temperature was higher this season, which was favourable for rainfall. Trough of low pressure and low pressure systems developed in Bay of Bengal and the Arabian sea activated the good rainfall in the state, the sources said.
