Kerala Soaps smells profit, reaches out to foreign market

KOZHIKODE: The Kerala Soaps, a state-owned soap manufacturing company which was revived by the LDF government, is slowing bidding goodbye to its grim past.

Buoyed by new market strategies, the firm, which runs on a no-profit, no-loss basis, expects to break-even this financial year.

The company is planning to expand its market operations to west Asia and South Africa by April 2013. It has already entered into a pact with Halo Trading Company to sell its products in west Asia. The company has started receiving orders from Kuwait and many government departments such the railways.

The firm got a shot in the arm when the state government issued an order in January stating that any government department can by soaps from the firm without tender procedures. With the new market, the company has set a target of Rs 10 crore for the 2012-2013 financial year from the market across the country.

V Sasikumar, general manager in-charge, Kerala Soaps said the company started with one product and now has eight different soaps. “We will launch three more products in this year,” he said.

It will launch 80 gram Rhythm soap with rose and lemon fragrance. The economy class soap would cost around Rs 10. Another major launch will be 150 gram trio classic family pack. The price of the three soaps weighing 150 gram each will cost Rs 135. It also plans to introduce another soap for which the discussion of which has already been started.

The three new products will hit the market in May.
