More trouble for Kerala CPI (M)

The Kerala unit of the CPI(M), which has been struggling in the face of embarrassing disclosures over the past few weeks, found itself again on the defensive on Monday with television channels coming up with clippings of a local party leader’s speech at a public meeting at Onchiyam more than two years ago threatening to ‘behead’ Revolutionary Marxist Party leader T.P. Chandrashekaran, who was killed on May 4.

Tell-tale visuals

The visuals of the speech made by Onchiyam local committee secretary V.P. Gopalakrishnan was reportedly made on February 5, 2010, at a meeting organised by the CPI (M) in protest against the alleged attack on party workers in the Onchiyam region. In the clipping, Mr. Gopalakrishnan is heard threatening to behead Chandrashekaran if even some minor harm came to any CPI(M) worker in the area at the hands of Chandrashekaran’s followers.

The clipping has surfaced at the most inopportune moment because several party cadres and leaders are under the scanner of a Special Investigation Team following Chandrashekaran’s killing and another probe over the brutal killing of a young Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) worker in Kannur district earlier this year.

Another conspiracy

Separately, the police have also begun investigating the charge that a section of the CPI(M) leadership in Kozhikode and Kannur districts conspired to finish off the RMP leader two years ago. Two of those arrested in connection with the Chandrashekaran murder case were present at the 2010 meeting where the threat to behead Chandrashekaran was made.

“More evidence soon”

Kozhikode Rural Superintendent of Police T.K. Rajmohan told The Hindu that no case was registered in connection with the visuals aired on television on Monday. However, K.K. Rema, wife of the slain RMP leader, said the new evidence should go to prove that the CPI(M) leaders were involved in her husband’s killing. More such evidence would soon tumble out, she said.
