Women unsafe in Kerala: Annie Raja

Annie Raja.

“Anyone can abuse women in public, no one will get punished. Chief whip’s abusive statement and inaction against it is a best example of that. No one questions women exploitation in the society,” said Annie Raja, All India secretary, National Federation of Indian Women, while inaugurating the seminar on “Women and General Society” organised by Kerala Mahila Sangaham (KMS) women’s wing of CPI.

The neo-liberal economic policy even denies the right to be born as a girl child in the country. Most exploited are the ASHA workers and Anganwadi workers in health field. Those workers are exploited in the name of voluntary services for the society, without sufficient payment or permanency of job.

To stop this exploitation and treatment as second class citizen in the society, women have to reassert the equal rights enshrined in the Constitution. About 96 percent of working class women are unorganised which has to be changed. Women’s Common Plan and Gender budget proposed for uplifting the women by union ministry have no funds, she added.

Prof. Meenakshi Thampan, state president KMS, Latha Devi, former MLA, C.S. Sujatha, former
MP and others were present at the seminar.
