‘Teri Meri Kahaani’ and ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ fail to make it big at BO

‘Teri Meri Kahaani’ collected around Rs 17 crores while ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ collected around Rs 10.5 crores – both not being at par with their scale.

The Friday gone by saw two big releases falling in two absolutely diverse genres. While both had decent start, none managed to make it big at the box-office.

Despite the big star-cast and lavish budget, the hype surrounding Kunal Kohli’s Teri Meri Kahaani was somewhat missing which showed on day one when the film did not start on a positive note. Neither was there any rise in prospects over the weekend. Though the film has managed to collect around Rs 17 crores over its opening weekend, trade experts feel that it doesn’t justify the scale of the film. And with no rise in business, it could make things difficult for the film.

Gangs of Wasseypur might not boast of big names in cast beyond Manoj Bajpayee but the film made enough news in the international circuit (Cannes Festival) as well as in India. While expectations were huge for Anurag Kashyup’s most ambitious project, the film managed to collect around Rs 10.5 crores in its opening weekend. It did lose out to big audience due to its crude content and language. Also the film couldn’t be categorized as a single screen film or multiplex cinema. The world cinema treatment made it seem like a multiplex film while the rustic mass-appeal made it seem like designed for single screens. But since the film was somewhere in between, it didn’t have a defined target audience. With positive reviews and good word of mouth, the business did escalate over the weekend.

Sonu Sood gets a chance to feature as the solo lead in Kabeer Kaushik’s Maximum. While there is Naseeruddin Shah in the film, Sonu still is getting more mileage. It needs to be seen however if, the actor who has been accepted in villain and character roles, can pull off a film all by himself.

The other three releases of the week are comparatively smaller films. Sharman Joshi’s decade-delayed 3 Bachelors is attempting to cash on the success of Ferrari Ki Sawaari but in vain. From item-girl, Veena Malik makes her debut as the leading lady in Daal Mein Kuch Kaala Hai. Finally there’s Superman of Malegaon – a spoof on the superhero Superman.
