Mumbai Marines spoil Chennai Cheetahs’ party

MUMBAI: It was supposed to be Chennai Cheetahs’ party. Mumbai Marines, however, had no plans to play good hosts. The end result: Cheetahs joined the Marines, Delhi Wizards and Bhopal Badshahs in crashing out of the semifinal race of the inaugural World Series Hockey tournament.

Cheetahs, who needed a victory to qualify for the semifinals, lost 1-4 to Marines to bow out on a low. The Jose Brasa-coached side were fifth on the table with 19 points and a win would have given them 22 points and third spot on the table. Alas, that was not to happen.

Marines did their immediate neighbours, Pune Strykers, a huge favour with the victory that could easily be their best so far. Only, it came too late. Xess Banmali, Ajmer Singh, Troy Sutherland and Ajuib Ekka scored for Marines while Imran Warsi reduced the margin for Cheetahs.

The Marines had a great start to their match when they took the lead as early as the fourth minute, Banmali opening the scoring with a fine reverse hit. It was a move from the right, the favourite flank for attacks, that caught Chennai flatfooted.

Australian Sutherland’s pass from the goaline found Xess in perfect position.

Marines got their second in the 21st minute when Ajmer scored from the spot. Earlier, Delhi Wizards beat Sher-e-Punjab 7-5, in Delhi.

Semifinals, Sunday: Chandigarh Comets vs Pune Strykers in Bangalore (7 pm); Sher-E-Punjab vs Karnataka Lions in Mumbai (9 pm).
