Paes & Vesnina falter in Australian Open final

BANGALORE: The fifth-seeded Indo-Russian pairing of Leander Paes and Elena Vesnina came up short at the crunch after battling back from an error-stained opening set in the mixed-doubles final of the Australian Open, in Melbourne on Sunday.

In the end, the eighth-seeded American-Romanian pairing of Bethanie Mattek-Sands andHoria Tecau, playing their first Grand Slam final, came through 6-3, 5-7, 10-3 in an hour and 42 minutes.

The winners took home $135,500 for the fortnight’s run while Paes, playing his 13th mixed-doubles final, and the spirited Vesnina, settled for $67,500.

Paes, 38, who started slowly on Sunday afternoon after the intense men’s doubles affair the previous evening that helped the Indian complete his career Grand Slam of men’s doubles titles, came into his own after a rain break stalled proceedings for 15 minutes at Melbourne Park. Paes played electric tennis in the last 20 minutes of the hour-long second set after the striking Vesnina had done the ground work.

The Indo-Russian pair broke the colourful Mattek-Sands, who turned up for the final in a fluorescent green tee, in the eighth and 12th games of the second set to level set scores at 1-1.

In the super tie-break, Mattek-Sands repaid the complement in the opening point with a screaming forehand down-the-line winner on the run that passed a stranded Vesnina and brought the crowd to its feet.
