Steyn turns on the magic

Dale Steyn has made it a habit of leaving some memorable moments in the IPL competition. The 28-year-old South African illustrated the qualities of a fast bowler in a most emphatic manner at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. His fellow countryman Richard Levi received a brutal first ball and was stunned to see his stumps shattered, and the bowler bellowing a silent yawn that conveyed a lot. Steyn had not figured in Deccan Chargers’ previous match against Pune Warriors at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium. The Chargers had won that match which was its first victory in IPL-V.

A fair crop of green at the Wankhede resulted in Steyn’s return to the playing XI and the new ball being straightaway tossed to him in the second session of the night match. Levi was quite unlucky making his return to the top order of MI, as not many accomplished opening batsman would have survived the first delivery that was lethal in true cricketing parlance. It was for the second time in this year’s IPL that Levi fell bowled.

Summoned to the middle to face the second ball, Rohit Sharma groped forward, showing the full face of the bat, but Steyn’s masterly manipulation of the seam, left the MI right hander transfixed. He became desperate and attempted a wild shot that prompted Sachin Tendulkar to convene a quick mid-pitch counselling session. Sharma survived and made some runs and took MI towards an important victory. Steyn left his authority on Tendulkar, who while trying to play across saw the ball deflected towards third man.

“It must be unbelievable and fantastic to sit on the side lines and in the press box and watch Dale bowl. He was fast, swinging the ball and accurate. It was a great contest for a little while between Dale and Rohit. Dale’s record in all formats of international cricket speaks for itself. I think Rohit is one of the best players in the world. I find it very hard to believe that he’s not playing for India in all formats of the game,’’ said DC skipper Cameron White.

Steyn ended up with a splendid figures of 4-0-10-2 (Levi and Dinesh Karthik), his analysis against MI at Visakhapatnam was 4-1-12-3 (T.Suman, Levi and Kartik). Then, it was Sharma’s unbeaten 73 that won the match for MI.

Two years ago, and while turning out in RCB colours at Jamtha, Nagpur, Steyn’s superb opening burst (eventually the South African finished at 4-0-18-3) consumed Herschelle Gibbs, Suman and Adam Gilchrist. Then the Chargers recovered through Rohit Sharma, Mohnish Mishra and won the match.

The likes of MI’s Lasith Malinga and Steyn have always had attention riveted on them and produced some magic moments in the IPL. Malinga took 4 for 16 in 3.4 overs and played his part in MI’s fifth win in nine matches, but it was Steyn’s utmost show of human potential as a fast-bowler-cricketer on the field that had the spellbinding effect. No wonder he was declared the man of the match.
